Family: My Son

Today marks 6 years of having our first and so far only son in our family. He is our middle child and full of spunk. Of the three children his pregnancy was the most difficult. However difficult it was I always had a reassuring feeling that everything was going to be OK. At nine weeks I threatened miscarriage and after that Dr appointment was told that my parents' (my husband, daughter, and I were living with them at that time) house was on fire. So much for not stressing like the Dr had said to do. Turned out it wasn't my parents' house but the neighbor's house, which was still stressful for us because they were like family to us. Then when we went to see what we were going to have the ultrasound technician told us that there was something wrong with him. He had a clubfoot. We didn't know what that meant and were nervous about it. The specialist didn't calm our fears, but was able to tell us that he only had one foot clubbed and everything else looked fine. I thought all was OK but was still uneasy and kept thinking "I'm going to go to the OB and not go home but to the hospital from the office." I told my family this and they reassured me it was normal pregnant brain. Well at 32 weeks I went to the OB with my oldest daughter, almost 2 at the time, and told them I thought that my water had broke. A little random to not "know" that your water had broken or not, but with my daughter it had and it wasn't the gush like everyone hears about so I knew it was possible. They checked me and my fluids were so low they sent me to the hospital from the Dr's office. My concern was confirmed, but I still KNEW everything would be fine. I was scared because I had my daughter and my parents were out of the country, luckily my sister lives in town and she got my daughter from the hospital and my husband met me in the triage. I didn't have my son that day like we all thought. I was checked into the hospital and stayed for three weeks. However during those three weeks my husband was going to be gone for two of them to do a training for the Army Reserves. He flew out to do the training, but when he was gone the Dr told me that if my son's lungs were developed enough they would do the c-section then. I asked if they would wait until my husband's time away was done and the Dr said, "No." I wasn't going to have my first major surgery and deliver our first son without my husband near so he was called and was able to come home from the training. I still didn't deliver until my husband's two weeks of training would have been up, but he was there and it helped. My so was born 5 weeks premature and with his clubfoot. He stayed in the NICU for 10 days and soon after he came home he got his foot treated . Fast forward to my son being almost 2 and we are saying goodbye to my husband as he goes overseas to Kuwait. We knew he would be sent overseas after 9/11 happened we just didn't know when or even where exactly. When his unit was getting ready to deploy I was terrified of my husband going to Iraq, I kept having dreams of him getting blown up at a checkpoint. The unit had two places to go overseas, one Iraq and one Kuwait. We were blessed my husband went to Kuwait. While gone some of my husband's unit came home, I was confused about it because they were names I didn't know. I found out that they were stationed in Iraq and they had gone to the 2 week training my husband came home from. Had he stayed for those 2 weeks he would have been deployed when our son turned a year, and that year was a year jamm packed with trajedy. We first found out my son's allergy to Codine when the surgeon came out and told us that he had stopped breathing on his own during the simple surgery, luckily he had a breathing tube. My sister and my husband's mother both had a form of cancer they were diagnosed with that same year. Then a cousin of mine died in a freak accident going home to her family after visiting my sister with cancer. Then during my son's 1st birthday my grandfather went into the hospital and didn't go home. Then another cousin of mine died of a brain cancerous tumor. So needless to say my son putting me into the hospital for three weeks was a blessing because it kept my husband from going to one of the scariest places on earth, to me at the time, during a year time when I needed his support.

Family

As I mentioned in a blog before I am going to sprinkle my regular postings with Family postings. My extended family on my Father's side has a monthly newsletter that they have been keeping up for many many years, longer than I've been alive. It is their way and now our way we stay as connected to each other's lifes as we can. I write about this now because, it's the end of the month and that's the deadline to submit an article to the newsletter to update the family of our personal and family doings for the past month or months depending on when we submitted our last article entry. Yes there are personal blogs and facebook to stay connected the newsletter gives this huge family a one stop shop to see what we are all up to without scouring through the many other distractions that blogs and facebbok can bring. Family is with you forever keep them close. Something I forgot to mention is that usually my immediate family helps me proof read my articles that I submit to the extended family newsletter.

Family Proclamation- not an activities post

I statred my blog and posting about activities because I like to share information, also because I have a family that I like to do things with. Doing my blog reminds me of weekly activities that I want to do with my kids, my spouse, and my friends. So there's a blog that is celebrating family and the Family Proclamation that the LDS church has published to the world. So to be a part of the celebration I am to blog about family and link the other blog's link to my blog. http://beinglds.blogspot.com/
http://chocolateonmycranium.blogspot.com/

Not everyone has to link to the blog or even like this, but this is my blog so I get to do with it what I want. I will still post weekly activities, but I will have some family ones mingled inbetween some activity posts. If you don't want to read it, don't and know it will be labeled Family so you can skip it. Please don't leave any comments on my posts if they are negative in nature, if there are any comments that draw away from the openness of my blog I will delete the comment and have to privatize my blog and I don't want to do that because I think everyone likes to know about Free activities. I am aware people are allowed to have freedom of speech on open forums, but people also need to be respectful of others. I've seen that on Facebook people can be disrepctful, this is why I'm writing these boundaries. On the other hand if you do like this and decide to participate mention my name when you post a comment on the other blog, then I can get more entries. I get a lot of information when I enter contests, one reason I enter and the other reason is I like to get free things.

Weekend events

It's Friday! Here are toay and tonight's freebies and activites.
Friday the 18th of June is free Jetty Petty Smothies for the first 500 customers wearing flip-flops at Tropical Smoothie.
Tonight is an chance to see Ronald McDonald in person at the McDonalds on Boulder Highway and Lake Mead starting at 6:30 PM. They also have coupons with their flyer for a $1.99 Hamburger Happy Meal. Meeting Ronald McDonald events they have prizes and usually everyone wins. Once my kids won an entire Happy Meal Wizard of Oz toy collection.
Friday June 18th the free movie tonight is at The District and it's: Planet 51
The District
also has Music on Main Street and Friday the 18th of June it's: Jeffrey Allen from 6 PM- 9PM This is a great way to support local and regional artists.

Before posting tomorrow's activities, there are plenty, I wanted to comment about Thursday's Storytime Tales at the Galleria. First of all the kids and I were late, I thought there'd be another half hour, but was mistaken. The Tales last aprox. 30 minutes starting at 9:30AM and it counts towards the summer reading program.
Next Thursday the 24th the Fratello Marionettes will be doing three fairy tales, I plan on going. Thursday July 1 will be Artic Tales
July 8: Puppet Show
July 15th PBS Keeping Kids Fit!
(my kids love PBS kids)
July 22: Puppet Show
July 29: Julie Austin Returns!
August 5: Puppets and More
(this should be the most fun since I assume it's their last one, all of them are fun though.)
http://www.mypubliclibrary.com

Also this Saturday the 19th of June the free movie at The District is an edited version of : The Blind Side
The Music on Main Street
is by The Brothers

Since the weekend is usually when people decide to splurge and go out to eat I wanted to add my eating out deals. I am a self proclaimed fast food junkie, too much of one but I use coupons and survey codes to keep it as cheap as possible. First tip: that I have is if you have a favorite eating out location take part of their loyalty programs, they send straight to your mailbox, inbox, cell phone, wall post whereever you allow them to discounts to their place of business. Also become a Fan on facebook for deals. Most have birthday programs so you can celebrate your birthay with food you enjoy eating that you usually cut back on other days. Second tip: always check your reciept for a survery. If there is a survey, take it! Capriottis you get $3 off your next sandwich, which if you only get the small is 50% off. Panda Express you get a free entree when you buy a three item combo. My sister tipped me off about this trick with Panda, you can order a two-item combo and the third item can be your kids' item. Sonic you get a code for a free route 44 soda. Pick Up Stix you get a free appetizer up to $6. Some surveys you only are helping the employees when you call and take it, so if your friend works there and you call you give your friend good reviews. Also with this tip go to the companies website and leave a message about some of their products and they might send you special coupons you wouldn't have gotten otherwise. I did this when I had an issue with a promotion at a fast food place, I didn't get a coupon right away, but I did later in the mail get two coupons to get a free food item. We as consumers are the ones that keep places in business, they want our feedback. Third tip: just look at the ads and coupons in the mail, throw out the ones you won't use at all and keep the ones you will. Taco Bell had coupons for free regular sized drinks of their new products, along with the normal buy1get1 free. Smiths had a sale where you bought 10 utems on the list you get a Free Digital choice code to use. I got 2 free movie tickets from that, up to $12. They also have a stand that you buy three items from you get a code to rent a movie for a night from Redbox. Fourth tip: check your friends' pages and blogs, word of mouth is a quick way to spread the news about free goodies. Fifth tip: Kids Eat Free many resturants now have nights that kis eat free. Panda Express, Quiznos, Dennys, and IHOP as far as I'm aware every night kids eat free with a purchase of an adult meal, drinks are not included. There are others and I'll look them up and write about them later, it's late/early now so I'll stop and post a reminder to read about the deals on Facebook.

Except I remembered I wanted to write about the Galleria Mall has a free program, that I thought was the same thing as the library's Storytime Tales, called Fun at Sun Kids Club the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month at 10:30 AM in the food court. Also at the Galleria is The Ends of The Earth exhibit and they have group rates of 15 or more $2, you have to call ahead though. This is brought to us by http://HendersonLive.com they have a ton of other events some Free some not. The link is the best place to see what they have. I might post some of their concert series events as well.
